Black Iron Rubber Co. was founded in 2000 by it's current owner, operator and President. He has worked at the facility for 15 years, and prior to that was in the tire processing industry. He also worked on the start-up staff for the State of Minnesota when it instituted the first waste tire disposal program in North America.

BIRCO has learned much in working with rubber, scrap rubber, and other off-spec polymers at its integrated facility which processes, compounds, and molds rubber products. Many people have asked us if our product is recycled. Like many things in our world that seem simple, the answer depends on the definition. We are recognized by the State of Minnesota as a Resource Recovery Facility.  ALL of the components we use are either post-industrial or post-consumer materials.   And,  since we do our own compounding, we are able to control the recycled content of the product we are making based on customer needs and intended use. It is usually true that adding recycled content will alter natural rubber characteristics of virgin rubber, like tensile strength and elongation. Experience has taught us that in some instances, characteristics like wear resistance can actually be improved, especially on a price-performance basis.

Vinyl and foam will break down quickly with continuous use. Binder mats will break down with use and the binder agents come under attack by ozone and other natural forces, but vulcanization technology, (exactly what is used to make automotive tires)  has longevity. Unfortunately for us, most people only look at column #1 in making a buying decision. That decision becomes a bigger expense for the customer, who is also faced with a headache of disposal of worn out mats.
